Part 1: How to Prepare for Your Senior Portrait Session

What to do 2-4 Months in Advance to Prepare for Your Senior Portrait Session

Your senior year is a whirlwind of activities, significant moments, and so many things to check off your "to do" list! While exciting, it can feel overwhelming at times! Your senior portraits are one of those things, that if you are not careful and prepared, can feel like just another check on your list. One more thing to get accomplished this year. We do not want that!

Senior portraits should be fun! They are not something to dread but something to look forward to! These images will be a physical reminder of this unique moment in your life! To ensure your session goes smoothly and you feel calm, comfortable, and excited, it's important to start preparing well in advance. Here’s what you should be doing two to four months in advance to prepare for your senior portrait session.

1. Pick a Time and Date

Choosing the right time and date for your session is crucial. Consider your schedule and think about when you'll be most relaxed and not rushed. Senior year can be BUSY and photographers can book up quickly, especially during the fall/winter months when the sun goes down earlier. If possible, choose a time when you typically feel your best. The lighting is best either early in the morning (think sunrise) or late in the afternoon just before sunset. So, aim for early morning or late afternoon when the light is soft and flattering.

2. Pick a Location

The location of your shoot can set the tone for your photos. Do you want a natural, outdoor setting, or do you prefer an urban backdrop? All of my clients receive a style guide that has a list of locations to help them get started. If you have somewhere special in mind, please let me know! I love exploring new locations! Is there a location that holds sentimental value to you or your parents? Tell me about it!! Whether it’s a favorite park, a downtown area, or your school campus, I want to make sure your images are a true reflection of your personality and style.

3. Fill Out and Return the Senior Questionnaire

My clients receive a questionnaire to fill out and return to me before our senior portrait session. This helps me to better understand your preferences, style, and expectations leading up to your session. This form includes questions like: what are your hobbies, would you like to incorporate any props, how do you describe your style, and are there any specific ideas you have for your session? Be thorough and honest in your responses—it will help me tailor the session to fit YOU.

4. Ask Your Photographer Any Questions You May Have

Communication is key to a successful portrait session. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out! Whether it's about the session process, outfit choices, or what to expect on the day, getting clarity will help you feel more confident and prepared.

5. Read Through the Style Guide and Start Thinking About Your Outfits

My clients receive a 43-page style guide with tips on what to wear for your session. Read through it carefully and start planning your outfits. Think about different looks that showcase various aspects of your personality. Consider bringing a mix of casual, semi-formal, and personal favorite outfits. Make sure everything is clean, pressed, and fits well.

6. Take Care of Your Hair, Nails, and Skin

A polished look will enhance your photos, so plan any haircuts, color touch-ups, or nail appointments in advance. Aim to schedule these at least a week before your session to allow time for any adjustments. Fresh, neat hair and nails will ensure you look your best and feel confident during your shoot...and PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not get a spray tan. I know we love that sun-kissed glowy look but a spray tan just isn't it. It will photograph orangeish and no amount of editing can fix that orange tone in all your pictures. Your natural skin will photograph beautifully. Also, be careful of tan lines. If you head to the beach the week before your session and get awkward tan lines, those cannot be edited out either.

Whenever you are ready to schedule your senior portraits, please feel free to shoot me an email (april@aprilgraysonphotography.com) or fill out my contact form HERE, and we will get you on your way to some beautiful senior portraits!!!

Being prepared and knowing what to expect is key to helping you feel comfortable and make the whole process enjoyable. Stay tuned for Part 2, where we'll dive into what you need to bring to your portrait session.
